Gavan Hicks has lived every cricketer's dream of making a century for Australia at the home of cricket, the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Gavan played in the Tri Nations “All Abilities Tournament” between England and South Africa.
In the game against South Africa he managed just 9 runs however in the game played at the MCG against England he smashed 113 off 100 balls. His 113 was the highest Cricket Tri Series individual score in the history of the series. Australia went on to win the match and Gavan was named man of the match. Against South Africa in the next match Gavan took control of the ball and bowled impressively to take 4 /28. He then took to the South African bowlers and scored another century - 109 off 88 balls in a match winning performance.

Under New Management
The Avoca Newsagency and Tattslotto has new owners,
Rod and Jenny Eason.
|
|
After 20 years in the milk industry Rod was made redundant so he and Jenny decided to buy their own business. They fell in love with Avoca after searching for a new town to start the next phase of their lives.
They moved from Tatura and after spending time with John and Sheree to learn the ropes they are now keen to build on the business and become part of the Avoca community.
Jenny hopes to transfer to the Avoca Lions and they are both keen golfers.
They have four children and two granddaughters who all live in Melbourne.
Call in and make yourself known to Jenny and Ron while trying your luck at Tattslotto or picking up the papers. There is also a large range of magazines, stationary and gifts.
We all wish John and Sheree well as they leave the business after 16 years. |

Joan & Betty Retire After 20 Years |
 |
After 20 years of delivering Meals on Wheels to Avoca residents, Joan Neil and Betty Brereton both now in their 80's, have decided it's time to say farewell to their clients and maybe receive a meal or two themselves.
Joan decided to volunteer to deliver Meals on Wheels after cooking in the hospital kitchen for many years.
"When I gave up I felt it was something I should do to help the community."
Both Joan and Betty have met many wonderful people in that time and enjoy catching up with recipients each week. |
| Here they are saying farewell to Bob Robinson. Thank you ladies, I'm sure you will be missed by all you visited during those 20 years. |

Charles Warburton Carr, Esq |
|
|
For many years now the Portrait in Oils of Charles Warburton Carr, Esq., who was the Police Magistrate, Gold Commissioner, etc at Percydale and Avoca during the 1860s to 1880s has been "locked away, waiting to be released" from the dust and grime that has partially hidden its magnificence for many years.
On Sunday the 16th of November members of the Avoca & District Historical Society were delighted to unveil the portrait and release Charles on parole for the community to watch over him.
|
|
| Charles came to Avoca after serving the town of Yankee Jim's, later named Warburton after him, and Ballarat, where he was given the task of fixing the mess left after the Eureka Rebellion. His integrity was well known and this enabled him to rectify many unjustices that had occurred during those difficult times.
During his 24 years in the Avoca district serving the towns of Dunolly, Maryborough, Lexton and Avoca as Police Magistrate, Gold Commissioner and Cororner he formed many friendships living amongst the people he served and cared for. He was well loved by the community and there was a real sense of loss when he died at the age of 61 on 31st July 1888.
Unfortunately there is no record of where he is buried in the Avoca cemetery and mystery still abounds as to why he was buried in an unmarked grave.

John and Sue Lyten are the new owners of the Avoca Motel. They had been looking for a motel to retire to and when they drove through the gates of the Avoca Motel they knew they were 'home' Previously they had managed a pub in Williamstown for 5 years so after a trip overseas they did some motel sitting to learn the ropes.
|
When Paul and Julie Trumble from the Avoca Hotel decided it was time to do some travelling and have someone wait on them for a change, they opened the doors and welcomed new managers David and Dorothy who have come from Skipton where they managed the Skipton Hotel. |
The Pyrenees Gourmet Butcher's has been sold to Brendan Bouchier from Mortlake and it will be managed by Deca Bradbury. Avoca Primary School student ,Caitlin Drummond, recently competed in the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association 2008 State Track and Field Championships which were held in Bendigo at Latrobe University.
Caitlin bettered her previous personal best high jump by .o4m when she cleared 1.25 metres to come third in the 9/10 years event. There was a tie for first with both students clearing 1.3 metres. No doubt the athletic talent scouts will be watching Caitlin's progress as there is room for improvement with Caitlin revealing she hadn't trained for the event and doesn't belong to a Little Aths club either. Well done Caitlin.

Lion's Club member Ernie Baker outlined the 3 year history of the Lion’s Club Avoca Citizen of the Year award and announced that this year the award was to be shared between husband and wife Bill & Colleen Drummond. Bill was certainly surprised to hear his name announced but Colleen was even more amazed as she thought that Bill was to be recipient.
A secret well kept everyone!

On Monday the 15th of December, local butcher Kelvin Charlesworth will open the doors and celebrate 50 years of butchery in Avoca.
When he turned 15 in 1958 Kelvin commenced working for his father who rented the shop at the time. |
|
They used to slaughter all their own meat at the abattoirs which they owned in a partnership until it was sold in 1978. Kelvin recalls that they used to transport the meat to the shop on the back of the ute with the meat lying on gum leaves.
In 1971 his father passed away and Kelvin purchased the business in 1972.
He carried on the business with one employee until 1990. Since 1990 he has managed the business on his own and during those 18 years he has rarely taken a holiday- only 3 to 4 days break at a time.
