TOWN PROFILE

Avoca is located in the heart of the Pyrenees Shire, in central west Victoria, Australia. It sits astride both the Pyrenees Highways between Castlemaine and Ararat, and the Sunraysia Highway between Ballarat and Mildura.

Initially settled for sheep and cattle grazing, Avoca quickly established itself as the administrative and commercial centre of the region when gold was discovered in the early 1850s.

vines_mtns200.jpg  Today gold still attracts fortune seeking prospectors to the district, however most visitors are now attracted to the Pyrenees region to sample our renowned wines and enjoy our magnificent state forests.   lookout200.jpg

With the backdrop of the Pyrenees Ranges and the tall red gums along its river banks, Avoca is an idyllic rural town to reside in or visit.  pplayground200.jpg
memorial_bank200.jpg  There is ample parking along our impressive divided main street and the modern amenities and services will impress travellers. Our wide main street originated in days gone by when bullock teams required a large turning circle and the historic buildings hark back to the gold rush days. They now house a variety of cafes, galleries, specialty shops and accommodation   chemist200.jpg
