"As Usual’ a large crowd gathered in the main street to partake in the delightful breakfast cooked by the Avoca Lion’s Club members.
President Ernie Barker welcomed the 200 + participants and invited the members of the Avoca Theatre Group to sing the national
anthem as the flag was raised.
Councillor John Quinn then addressed the gathering and gave his thoughts on
Australia Day — “As usual we think of aussie branded clothing, thongs, flags, and of course a lamb chop on the barbie” commented John “but it’s also a time for communities to come together.” He then invited those present to join the rest of the Pyrenees Shire at 10am at Landsborough for the official Australia Day ceremony.
“… and as usual I look forward to seeing you all here in 2011” he concluded.
Ernie then thanked the shire for their continued support of the Avoca breakfast and went on to recognise the many local and district groups who regularly support the Lions Club paper drives which raise much needed funds that are returned to the local communities. He presented cheques ranging from $250—$1000 to a wide variety of organizations.
The announcement of Lions Citizen of the Year came as a complete surprise to this year’s recipient, Noel Jess.
Noel is a founding member of the
Lions Club (38 years) and has probably
contributed a total 140 years of service to many Avoca organizations during that time, including the Fire Brigade, Turf Club, Football Club and of course the LIons Club.
Congratulations Noel!
This special day concluded at the Avoca Pool Party organized by AFEC & the YMCA.
Those present enjoyed face painting, yabby races, coloring competitions and of course heaps of fun in the water.
The winner of the Family Season's ticket for 2010-11 was Lisa Shannon from Amphitheatre.
Thanks must go to Kaye and her YMCA team who looked after everyone during the afternoon. Thanks also to the AFEC volunteers for organising the BBQ tea and assisting Kaye.
AFEC thanks the YMCA for their support and also the Avoca Community Bank for their continued sponsorship.
