In mid-August the rumble of V8 HQSS Holdens will return to the streets of Avoca to celebrate 50 years since the mighty “SS” rolled off the assembly line at Fishermen’s Bend.
Ten years ago Marg Pilgrim and her late husband Hayden, who owns an Ultra Violet SS, co hosted the 40th Birthday with Advance Avoca Inc (formerly Avoca Business & Tourism Inc) in August 2012.
At that time there was little communication between SS owners and no one had indicated that they were planning a celebration so they started promoting the possibility of an event in August 2012.
The SS friends were overwhelmed by the support they received both from the local Avoca community and the SS owners who travelled from Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and from all over Victoria.
On Saturday night a celebratory dinner was held at the Avoca Turf Club for 150 SS friends and car enthusiasts. They were joined by Ken Foletta, Phil Zmood, Leo Pruneau and Norm Darwin who entertained the gathering with information and displays on the development and manufacturing of the mighty SS. The weekend celebrations were an amazing success and those attending the dinner on the Saturday night hung on every word as the 4 gentlemen explained their role in the development of the SS. At the conclusion of the celebrations the attendees, many of whom had never met before, vowed to return to Avoca in 2022 for the 50th Birthday. In fact they were so excited about their new friendships that they decided to meet at a new destination every two years in August until 2022.
So now there are 3 weeks until the SS’s will return to Avoca with their owners to celebrate a very special birthday over the weekend. There will be registration and a Meet & Greet at the Avoca Hotel on Friday evening and on Saturday morning breaky will be provided by the Avoca CWA at the Avoca Public Park and registration will continue. A group photo of the SS’s will take place at 11:30 and after lunch, they will visit two local car museums.
The celebratory dinner will be held at the Avoca Shire Turf Club on Saturday evening. The 2 course meal will be provided by the Avoca Golf Club & Masonic Lodge. Three of the SS’s (in Infra Red, Lettuce Alone & Ultra Violet colors) will be on display at the dinner and guest speakers have been invited to address the gathering. Of course, the 50th Birthday Cake will be cut and all things 1970’s will be celebrated.
